Is Double Glazing Enough, or Should You Choose Triple Glazing?
Windows do far more than provide a view. They affect how a new home feels in winter and summer, how much outside noise you notice, and how the home performs as part of its overall thermal envelope.
The better question is: what whole-window performance does this home need, and how does the proposed system meet it?
Double and triple glazing are not the whole story
Double glazing uses two panes of glass with a sealed gap between them. Triple glazing uses three panes, creating two gaps. In general, an extra pane can improve thermal performance, but it does not tell you everything about how a completed window will perform.
New homes must meet Building Code H1 energy-efficiency requirements. Glass, spacer, gas fill, frame, seals and installation all matter—not simply pane count.
What makes one window system perform differently from another?
Several parts of a window can affect heat flow and comfort:
Low-emissivity (low-E) glass: A thin coating that can improve the thermal performance of an insulated glazing unit.
Gas between the panes: Some units use a gas fill rather than air. This can contribute to performance, but it should be considered alongside the rest of the system.
Spacers: The component separating panes at the edge of the insulated glass unit can affect heat loss around the perimeter.
Frame material and design: Aluminium, timber and uPVC frames perform differently. A thermally broken aluminium frame includes a material break designed to reduce the direct path for heat through the frame.
Whole-window rating: The frame and glass together determine the performance of the installed window. This is more useful than comparing glass alone.
Window size, location and shading: Large areas of glass, orientation and exterior shading influence solar gain, glare and summer comfort.
When might triple glazing be worth considering?
Triple glazing may suit a higher-performance, colder, exposed or heavily glazed home. It is heavier and can affect cost, frame selection and design, so consider it room by room.
Instead of choosing triple glazing by default, ask these questions:
What whole-window performance is proposed for each window type?
How does that system meet the applicable Building Code H1 requirements?
What difference will the upgrade make to comfort, condensation risk, sound, cost and summer heat management for this design?
Are the frames thermally broken or otherwise designed to support the glass performance?
How will orientation, overhangs, external shading and ventilation be addressed?
Make the decision as part of the whole-home design
Think about the rooms you use most, the sun each façade receives, local wind exposure, privacy, noise and whether you are prone to overheating. Review the window schedule early enough to change layout or specification before the contract and consent documents are finalised.

Final thoughts: compare performance, not pane count
Triple glazing can be useful, but it is not the default answer for every Canterbury home. Compare whole-window performance alongside insulation, orientation and shading.
