Do You Need a Heat Pump or Ventilation System in a New Build?

A new home should feel comfortable in a Canterbury winter, fresh after a shower, and manageable on a hot summer day. That naturally leads to a common question: do you need a heat pump, a ventilation system, or both?

Heating and ventilation solve different problems. Your new build needs to meet Building Code ventilation requirements, but the best system depends on the design and how you live.

Heat pumps and ventilation systems do different jobs

It is easy to group these systems together because both affect indoor comfort. In practice, their roles are different.

A heat pump heats and, in many models, cools indoor air. It is not automatically a fresh-air or moisture-extraction solution. A ventilation system provides, removes or exchanges air and can manage moisture and stale air.

The Building Code’s G4 ventilation clause allows compliance paths involving natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation or a combination. EECA also notes that extractor fans are required in kitchens and bathrooms. The exact system and design need to suit the home and its consent documentation.

What is required, and what is a comfort choice?

Every new home needs a compliant ventilation approach. That does not automatically mean every home needs the same dedicated whole-home ventilation product. Openable windows, extractor systems and mechanical systems may each form part of the solution, depending on the design and compliance approach.

A heat pump is a separate heating and cooling decision. Select it for the room, layout and expected use rather than adding it by default.

When reviewing a proposal, ask the builder or designer to separate these questions clearly:

  • How will the home meet ventilation requirements?

  • What extraction is provided in kitchens, bathrooms, toilets and laundries where applicable?

  • What system will heat the main living spaces, and does the layout need more than one unit or zone?

  • Is cooling important for west-facing rooms, upper levels or heavily glazed spaces?

  • How will the home be used during the day and overnight?

Separating ventilation from heating makes it much easier to compare options fairly.

Why the whole-home design matters

Good outcomes combine insulation, glazing, shading, wet-area extraction and a heating/cooling strategy. A system cannot compensate for a poorly considered design.

For example, a large north- or west-facing living area may need a different summer-comfort strategy from a smaller, shaded home. A household that dries washing indoors, has several occupants or keeps windows closed for noise or security reasons may have different ventilation priorities from a household that regularly opens windows and spends much of the day out.

Questions to ask before choosing a system

Use these questions to turn a broad “do we need it?” discussion into a useful design brief:

  1. What problem are we solving? Is the priority winter heating, summer cooling, bathroom moisture, fresh-air supply, condensation management, noise, allergies or all of these?

  2. What ventilation solution is being used for compliance? Ask for a clear explanation of natural, mechanical or combined ventilation in the proposed home.

  3. Where will the equipment sit? Consider outdoor-unit placement, roof or ceiling space, duct routes, grilles, drainage and noise.

  4. How will it be controlled and maintained? Ask about filters, cleaning, servicing, warranty information and access for future maintenance.

  5. What is included in the contract? Confirm the product, capacity, number of units or zones, electrical work, vents and commissioning rather than relying on a generic label such as “heat pump included”.

  6. How will summer heat be managed? Windows, shading and layout all matter alongside cooling equipment.

If a system is being specified for a particular performance outcome, use a suitably qualified heating, ventilation or building-design professional for advice tailored to the home.
